Double Flip Top Score
September 22nd, 2008
So I was walking with my wife and dog tonight and I did a double take when I saw an old woman taking an empty flip top magnum of Stone Double Bastard to the curb for recycling. She was happy to give it to us and said she had a smaller one that the former college student tenant left. Turned out to be a 2 liter growler. Both are in excellent condition.
Unfortunately the Double Bastard bottle says “not refillable” so I’ll probably just look into ways to strip the paint so I can reuse it for some special future beer of mine (hmmm, maybe some of the barrel project?) Do any of you know how to clean it? If so shoot me an email at dave@slobrewer.com. I’ve heard a good soak in muriatic acid (pool acid) can do the job.
Dave.

Man, you’re lucky. I’ve been trying to hunt down big flip top bottles for weeks for a few special beers that I am going to be bottling soon. Trying to get people to give them up is impossible. I found a website that sells them in all sizes but they have a $500 min. order.
So why is the dba bottle non-refillable? Is it because of toxic paint or something?
I think Stone’s policy on the “Labeled” growlers is that they have to be refilled with the same beer that is on the label. So if they are doing growler fills of Double AB they probably would refill it.
California Law (according to Stone) states that you’re only able to fill a growler with the product that is on the label, hence why the 2 Liter Growler just says stone and doesn’t have a style label.
(nice blog, found it looking for info on the SLO homebrew club)
Star san solution for a couple of days and that silkscreen will rub right off with a scotch-brite pad.
